The $5 billion NEVI program is funding EV charging station buildout along designated corridors in every state. Federal law requires NEVI-funded stations to be installed by EVITP-certified technicians — creating a direct link between federal investment and trained workforce demand. This is one of the few trades with legislatively mandated employment.
Private investment in EV charging infrastructure is accelerating alongside federal programs. Major retailers, hotel chains, fleet operators, and apartment developers are all investing in EV charging as a competitive amenity. This private investment creates additional demand independent of NEVI funding.
The US needs to install approximately 330,000 more public charging stations to meet DOE targets. At roughly 2–4 technicians per major installation project, the workforce requirement is significant. The EV infrastructure trade is building from a small base into a major employment sector.
