What the Job Actually Looks Like

7:00 AM
Dispatch and first call
Check the day's service calls, load the van with parts and refrigerant, head to the first job. Residential techs often run 4–6 calls per day.
8:00 AM
Diagnostic and repair
Troubleshoot the system — check refrigerant levels, test electrical components, inspect ductwork. HVAC diagnosis requires both mechanical and electrical knowledge.
11:00 AM
Parts run or installation
Pick up a compressor or coil from the supply house, or assist on a new installation. New construction installs are bigger jobs that take most of the day.
1:00 PM
Afternoon service calls
Commercial accounts, preventive maintenance visits, or emergency calls. In summer in Florida or Texas, no-AC calls get priority.
4:00 PM
Paperwork and wrap
Log service reports, submit invoices, restock the van. Techs who run their own route are also quoting next-day jobs and ordering parts for tomorrow.

Skills That Make a Great HVAC Tech

Mechanical aptitude
Understanding how refrigeration cycles, airflow systems, and mechanical components work together. HVAC is one of the most technically complex trades.
Electrical knowledge
HVAC systems are heavily electrical. Reading wiring diagrams, testing circuits, and diagnosing control boards are daily tasks.
Problem-solving under pressure
A family with no AC in a Florida summer needs it fixed today. HVAC techs diagnose fast and fix right the first time.
Customer communication
Most HVAC techs interact directly with homeowners and business owners. Clear, professional communication builds the repeat business that top techs run on.
Physical conditioning
Working in attics, crawl spaces, and on rooftops in extreme heat. HVAC is physically demanding — especially in southern states.
Code and compliance
EPA 608 certification is federally required to handle refrigerants. State licensing adds another layer. Knowing the rules keeps your license and your clients safe.

HVAC is one of the most recession-resistant trades. When the AC breaks in August in Florida, it gets fixed — regardless of economic conditions. New refrigerant regulations phasing out R-410A are creating a massive replacement cycle that will drive demand for trained technicians for the next decade.

Heat pump adoption driven by federal energy incentives is expanding the HVAC skill set and creating premium pricing for certified heat pump technicians. Techs who stay current with new refrigerants and heat pump technology will command the highest wages.

In Florida and Texas, HVAC is essentially a year-round emergency service. The combination of extreme heat, aging housing stock, and population growth makes these two states among the strongest HVAC markets in the country.
