Training paths

How to Become a Boilermaker

Three ways in.
  • IBB apprenticeship 4 years. The Brotherhood of Boilermakers is the primary path into the trade.
  • Pre-apprenticeship certificate 12 months. Welding, rigging, and pressure vessel fundamentals — strengthens an IBB application.
  • Welding background + OJT AWS pipe welding certification opens boilermaker roles at refineries and power plants.

What the Job Actually Looks Like

6:00 AM
Safety briefing and permit-to-work
Work permits for confined space entry, hot work, and lockout-tagout procedures. Boilermakers work in high-hazard environments where permit compliance is mandatory.
7:00 AM
Pressure vessel inspection or repair
Inspecting tube bundles, repairing or replacing refractory, welding cracks in pressure vessels. Precision and code compliance are everything in pressure vessel work.
10:00 AM
Rigging and equipment positioning
Using cranes, come-alongs, and rigging equipment to position heavy components. Boilermakers are expert riggers by training and necessity.
12:00 PM
Lunch and afternoon planning
Review afternoon work. During turnaround events, work may continue through two shifts with different crews.
1:00 PM
Welding or tube replacement
Welding pressure vessel components, replacing heat exchanger tubes, or repairing boiler waterwall tubes. Boilermaker welding must meet ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
4:00 PM
Inspection and documentation
QC inspection of completed welds, documentation for ASME code records, and handoff to the night crew during turnaround events.

Skills That Make a Great Boilermaker

Pressure vessel welding
ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code welding is the most demanding welding certification in any trade. Boilermaker welders who consistently pass pressure weld tests command premium wages.
Confined space comfort
Working inside boilers, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers requires comfort in extremely confined and sometimes hot environments. Proper confined space training is mandatory.
Rigging expertise
Moving heavy industrial components with cranes and rigging equipment is a core boilermaker skill. Rigging errors can be fatal — proper training and execution are essential.
Blueprint and code reading
ASME code documents, isometric drawings, and weld procedure specifications are the technical documents boilermakers work from daily.
Physical endurance
Turnaround work means 10–12 hour shifts in industrial environments. Physical conditioning, heat tolerance, and sustained stamina are part of the job.
Safety compliance
Industrial facilities have extensive safety management systems. Permit-to-work, lockout-tagout, and personal protection equipment requirements are non-negotiable.

Refinery turnaround work drives $100K+ years

BLS projects a decline in boilermaker employment as coal power plants close, but the small workforce size means replacement demand creates openings even in a declining market. Experienced boilermakers are in consistent demand for planned industrial turnarounds.

The industrial boilermaker market is more resilient than the headline number suggests. Chemical plants, nuclear facilities, LNG terminals, and industrial process plants all require ongoing boiler and pressure vessel maintenance that sustains work for experienced boilermakers.

Turnaround boilermakers who travel to refinery and chemical plant shutdowns are some of the highest-paid tradespeople in any field. A boilermaker who works 3–4 major turnarounds per year can earn $100,000+ through a combination of base wages, premium overtime, and per diem allowances.

Boilermaker FAQs

The BLS projects a -4% decline, but this overstates the negative case. The small workforce means even modest replacement demand creates meaningful openings. More importantly, the existing boiler and pressure vessel infrastructure in the US requires ongoing maintenance indefinitely. Experienced boilermakers willing to travel for turnaround work are in consistent demand.
Contact your local International Brotherhood of Boilermakers (IBB) office. Apprenticeship positions are limited and competitive. Having a background in welding, particularly AWS pipe welding certification, significantly strengthens an application. Some locals have pre-apprenticeship programs.
A turnaround is a planned shutdown of a refinery, chemical plant, or power station for major inspection and maintenance. During turnarounds, facilities bring in hundreds of additional tradespeople including boilermakers for a concentrated period of intensive work. Turnaround boilermakers work long hours at premium rates — often 60–70 hours per week — for 3–6 weeks.
Welding is a core boilermaker skill. Specifically, pressure vessel welding to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code standards. Boilermaker welders who consistently pass ASME Section IX weld tests are among the most valued tradespeople in industrial facilities.
The ASME BPVC is the definitive technical standard governing the design, fabrication, inspection, and repair of boilers and pressure vessels. Boilermakers must understand and comply with its requirements for all pressure vessel work. Third-party inspectors verify code compliance on all ASME-stamped work.
