Training paths

How to Become an Elevator Installer

Three ways in.
  • IUEC apprenticeship 4 years. Highly competitive — this is the path. Application windows are limited and selective.
  • Elevator technology certificate 12 months. Not a substitute for IUEC, but strengthens your application.
  • Non-union employer In-house training at smaller companies. Lower wages and benefits than IUEC scale, but a legitimate entry where union work is scarce.

What the Job Actually Looks Like

7:00 AM
Site arrival and safety check
Review the day's work order, set up safety barriers and lockout-tagout procedures. Elevator work is confined space and high-voltage work — safety is always first.
7:30 AM
Installation or maintenance work
New installations involve setting the rail system, installing the car and counterweight, and wiring controls. Maintenance calls involve diagnosing malfunctions and repairing components.
10:00 AM
Electrical and control systems
Elevator mechanics work extensively with electrical control systems, variable frequency drives, and microprocessor controllers. This is some of the most technically complex work in any trade.
12:00 PM
Lunch and afternoon planning
Review afternoon assignments. Emergency service calls take priority — a stuck elevator in a high-rise is an urgent situation.
1:00 PM
Inspection prep or emergency call
Preparing for a city or state inspection, or responding to a service call. IUEC mechanics are on call for emergencies on the elevators they maintain.
4:00 PM
Documentation and closeout
Complete maintenance logs, inspection paperwork, and work orders. Elevator mechanics maintain detailed records required by state inspectors.

Skills That Make a Great Elevator Mechanic

Electrical expertise
Elevator control systems are sophisticated electrical systems. Reading schematics, programming microprocessors, and troubleshooting variable frequency drives are core skills.
Mechanical aptitude
Cables, sheaves, counterweights, brakes, and hydraulic systems all require mechanical understanding and precision maintenance.
Comfort in confined spaces
Elevator pits, machine rooms, and hoistways are confined work environments. Mechanics must be comfortable working in tight, sometimes claustrophobic spaces.
Problem-solving under pressure
A malfunctioning elevator in a busy building creates urgency. Mechanics diagnose and fix problems efficiently under time pressure.
Physical strength and balance
Working on the top of elevator cars, in pits, and carrying heavy components requires physical capability and exceptional balance.
Code and safety knowledge
ASME A17.1 governs every elevator installation. State inspectors test compliance and mechanics must know the code thoroughly.

Median vs all trades
#1
Highest median salary of any BLS trade category

Elevator mechanics have the highest median wage of any trade occupation in the BLS database — nearly $98,000 at the median. The workforce is small and specialized, which keeps wages high and entry competitive. Every new high-rise building, hotel, hospital, or airport requires elevator installation and ongoing maintenance.

The aging elevator inventory in existing buildings is driving a significant maintenance and modernization market. Older hydraulic elevators being upgraded to traction systems, and legacy control systems being replaced with modern microprocessor controls, create sustained work for skilled mechanics.

Getting into this trade requires patience. IUEC apprenticeship positions are limited and competitive. The trade-off is a career with the highest wages in the skilled trades, full union benefits, and essentially recession-proof demand.

Contact your local IUEC office — the application process varies by local but typically involves a written test, background check, and interview. Positions are limited and competition is high. Having a background in electrical work, construction, or a related trade strengthens your application.
IUEC apprentice wages are a percentage of journeyman scale and increase each year. In most markets, first-year apprentices start around $25–30/hr (approximately $52,000–62,000 annually) and reach full journeyman scale by year 4. California and New York locals have the highest scales.
Yes in most states. Florida requires elevator mechanic certification through DBPR. California, New York, and most major states require state certification in addition to IUEC credentials. IUEC training prepares mechanics for these exams as part of the apprenticeship.
Less than in major metros, but yes. Hospitals, airports, shopping centers, and multi-story buildings in suburban and mid-size markets all need elevator mechanics. Coverage areas for rural markets are handled by mechanics who travel from regional bases.
The terms are often used interchangeably. Installers focus on new construction — installing elevator systems in new buildings. Mechanics focus on maintenance and repair. Most IUEC journeymen do both, specializing in one or the other based on available work.
